The Hague - Development Minister Bert Koenders has suspended financial aid to Tanzania. In a letter to the Lower House, he explains that Tanzania is an unreliable partner for foreign investors.

Koenders took the decision after a Dutch entrepreneur lost his investment.

The letter does not name the entrepreneur or explain the details of the case, but the minister says enough is enough.

It is not clear how much money Tanzania will miss out on as a result of the decision.

Hedley Bull Scholarship 2009 for Master in International Studies at ANU College

The Graduate Studies in International Affairs program offers up to four Hedley Bull Scholarships each year for full-time study in the Master of Arts (International Relations) commencing in semester one. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Master of Arts (International Relations).
When applying for the MA (International Relations), eligible applicants for the Hedley Bull Scholarship should include a covering letter indicating their interest in being considered for the scholarship and making the case for being granted one. The covering letter together with the application for the MA (International Relations) (including transcripts and three academic references) will be considered as the full application for the scholarship. There is no need to provide a separate application. The scholarship provides a full-fee waiver for three full-time sessions (semesters). This amounts to 48 units of graduate coursework and a 24-unit thesis session.
Closing date for receipt of complete application for scholarship: 30 October 2009

Postdoc position in dynamic FEM at UC Berkeley

Prof. James O'Brien and I are looking to hire a post-doc for a project on Lagrangian FEM modeling of deformable solids with dynamically changing tetrahedral meshes, with applications in computer graphics. The primary qualifications are a strong mathematical knowledge of FEM for 3D solid mechanics, and the ability to write good FEM implementations in C or C++. Niceties would include familiarity with mesh generation algorithms, viscoplasticity modeling, fluid mechanics, solid-fluid coupling, and computer graphics.

The position is available as soon as we can get your paperwork processed, though we might be willing to wait for the right applicant. The salary has not been determined yet. The position will last one or two years, depending on how we like your first year. US citizens/permanent residents have an edge, but we'll consider strong folks from anywhere. I will gladly send a copy of the funded grant proposal, which describes in detail what we want to do, to anyone who requests it.
