We (Tanzania) need to reduce maternal deaths

The prospects of Tanzania attaining the Millennium Development Goal of reducing maternal mortality by 75 per cent by 2015 are slim. If the figures released Friday on the World Population Day are anything to go by, then there is a lot of work to be done on maternal health.

It is estimated that in some parts of the country, at least 252 women die each year from pregnancy-related complications in Shinyanga Region alone. Sadly, nearly half of the deaths are reportedly caused by excessive bleeding, which could be easily prevented if we had properly-trained nurses and doctors.

Our health system is overwhelmed by the increasing population, which does not match the number of practising and competent nurses and doctors. This is a huge challenge for the Government.Safe motherhood is universally accepted by all governments. It should ensure that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

This calls for comprehensive strategies and interventions, including having the right personnel and adequate equipment in our hospitals, to prevent the death or illness of a pregnant woman. Maternal mortality cannot be reduced unless an enabling health environment is created that puts the women's interest first. It is important for the Government to recommit to funding to improve maternal health.

'wow' weblinks - Recipes

  • Recipe Puppy.com - a search engine built by Kris Brower. As an avid cook with limited pantry often finding how to make a recipe without the key ingredient, or what to make with a few seemingly unrelated ingredients. Scoured the internet for a recipe search engine that could answer all queries, but the exact recipe search engine needed did not exist. Kris then set off to build own recipe search engine that could answer all questions.
When building this recipe search engine, I had a few goals in mind. It should be able to search by ingredient and/or keyword at the same time. You should be able to exclude recipes with ingredients you don't like. I shouldn't have to spend too much time building this (less than 1 month). It should be fast and easy to use. It shouldn't cost me too much a month to run.
  • Nibbledish.com - amazing Recipes. Delicious Food. Beautiful Photography. Created and rated by you and fellow food-lovers from all over the world. Nibbledish is your gastronomic hub where every visit will bring inspiration and a rumbling belly...
  • Heypasteit.com - Paste anything you want, then get a link to help you get it from anywhere or send it to friends.
  • LoveFoodHateWaste.com -  as the name suggest, this is a place where portion planner removes the guesswork by suggesting how much to cook, depending on who's coming for dinner, and ways to measure it.
As soon as I get new and cool recipe sites, I will update this list, so, you may want to save, email, bookmark or however you want to share this page for future reference (click the share button on the top left of this post).
