SUMATRA Removes Container Charges in Tanzania

The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) has removed charges on handling and transfer fees for containers moved to Inland Container Depots (ICDs) from the port. "In view of consolidating and harmonizing of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), TICTS, and ICD tariff, ICD handling and container transfer charges are hereby abolished," declared the statement. It was signed by both the SUMATRA director general, Mr Israel Sekirasa and its board chairman, Mr Peter Bakilana.
  • The move will no doubt please transporters who have been opposing the charges for about a year now.
  • This means that the costs should be incurred by the institutions running the port and the container terminal.
  • Customers should pay the same tariffs regardless of whether their cargo is cleared at the port or at the ICDs.

The regulator said abolishing container transfer and handling charges was also conforming to a concept adopted throughout the world. SUMATRA said ICDs and cargo freight stations in neighboring countries like Kenya are considered and treated as port extensions. These have a uniform tariff paid at a single point, an exercise that has generated efficiency in cargo handling and clearance.

SUMATRA said the removal of storage charges will continue for containers that overstayed in ICDs. But it added that transporters would be entitled to compensation at the same rate of storage charges where TPA, TICTS or ICDs delayed in delivering containers to customers who were ready and willing to take delivery. It further said that transit containers would be excluded from transfers to ICDs unless specifically required by shippers.

It also approved reduced storage free periods as part of efforts to de-congest the Dar es Salaam port, as requested by TICTS and TPA. The storage free period for domestic cargo has been reduced from ten to seven days while that for transit cargo has been reduced from 15 to ten days.

Drugs worth millions go missing in Tanzania

Kumbe ndiyo sababu watu wanafia mabarabarani na wengine wananunua 4WD? Alaaa! Ninyi kwa kweli, kweli ya kweli nasema kweli, ipo wakati mtakiona kilichomnyoa kuku manyoya, walahi si utani! Hii laana itakula kwenu. Na zitawatokea mapuani kwa spidi hamjawahi ona! Subirini apo hapo. Ninyi nakula mali ya mwananchi? Sawa iyo? Haaata! Hiyo si sawa...!

Part of Nick Mathiason of The Observer, Sunday 2 August 2009 reads:
Millions of dollars worth of life-saving drugs destined for Tanzanians living with AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria are missing or have expired, an internal Global Fund audit has discovered.

The Global Fund audit discovered large amounts of drugs sitting in warehouses past their sell-by date and found that other vital medicines were unavailable due to serious logistical failures. The audit also revealed that drugs worth $819,000 (£497,000) were missing.

Unless the situation improves, the Global Fund, the main source of funds for programmes to combat Aids, tuberculosis and malaria, has threatened to withold new funding to Tanzania.

Senior officials in the Global Fund say the country's national store does not have medical management systems with real-time online data. Logistics problems are so serious because anti-retroviral medicines have a short shelf life.

The fund's spokesman said: "It is vital that life-saving drugs get through to those who need them most and action must be taken to ensure this sort of thing does not happen in future."

WARNING: Jury Duty Scam

Never give out personal information to
an unsolicited phone call or email

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Pass this on to everyone. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security Number (ssn) and date of birth (dob) so s/he can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Hakuna anayejali: Ajali ya gari yaua 12 Manyara

Hata wiki moja haijaisha!
Ujinga mtupu. Mi nasubiri tu siku wafe wao ndo pengine tuwapate wengine watakaoshughulika, nadhani ndicho kilichobaki.
