(picha: mediad.publicbroadcasting.net)

Why voluntourism can be a complete waste of time, money - Pippa Biddle

The hair ties, hundreds of sparkly and metallic baubles, languished in big green duffel bags for the majority of my time in Tanzania. We handed out the pencils, rulers, and calculators we’d brought, but the hair ties stayed tucked away, out of sight and out of mind. Finally, on one of our last days there, we dug them out and repurposed them as brooches, bracelets, and chokers.

I was in Tanzania a few years ago as part of a trip organized by the private all-girls boarding school in Connecticut that I attended. Our group consisted of 15 students, most of whom were white, and a few teachers and chaperones. About $3,000 bought us a week at an orphanage, a few pickup soccer games, and a weeklong safari.

Our mission at the Bethsaida Orphans Girls Secondary School was to build a library. But it turned out that we, a group of highly educated high school students, couldn't deliver on this mission. We were so bad at the most basic construction work that, I found out later, the local men who were helping us had

Malawi and Tanzania move towards One-Stop Border Post

Malawi and the United Republic of Tanzania have taken the first step towards creation of a One Stop Border Post at the Songwe-Kasumulu entry point in a move aimed at facilitating the free movement of persons and goods between the two SADC Member States.

Officials from the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March that formalized the creation of a single customs and immigration centre at their common border.

Under the MoU, the border posts of Kasumulu in Tanzania and Songwe in northern Malawi will be operating under one umbrella by the end of the year.

Under the one-stop border post scheme, travellers and goods are cleared just once for passage into another country in contrast with the current situation where they have to be sanctioned on both sides of

Tanzania officials in US say lifting ivory ban would help elephants

Officials from Tanzania visited Dallas on Thursday to discuss the country’s issues with poaching, including the U.S. ban on imported ivory.

Lazaro Nyalandu, Tanzania’s minister of natural resources and tourism, and several other officials met with representatives from the Dallas Safari Club and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Thursday morning. They talked about the African nation’s efforts to curb poaching and exchanged ideas about how to stop the illegal activity.

Nyalandu was in the U.S. this week as part of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington. He said he hoped to persuade U.S. officials to lift their ban on ivory imports made earlier this year in hopes of

Malawi rules out war with Tanzania over lake dispute

Malawian President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of going to war with neighboring Tanzania over an ongoing border dispute involving Africa's third largest freshwater lake.

"Yes, I said [the] Lake Malawi issue is not negotiable, but we cannot go to war with Tanzania over the lake," President Mutharika told a press briefing.

During his presidential campaign, Mutharika had said the border dispute with Tanzania – which revolves around the disputed lake – was not negotiable.

But the newly-elected president confirmed on Tuesday that he had discussed the issue with Tanzanian
