Rwanda bans cars from capital city one day every month

For five hours on Sunday (Aug 14), cars were banned from Rwanda’s capital of Kigali. Instead, the streets were filled with groups of Rwandans clad in sweats and sneakers, walking, jogging, or stretching. People gathered in Rwanda’s biggest stadium, the Amahoro Stadium, for free eye tests and general medical check ups.

Kigali joins a global “pedestrianization movement” where cities around the world are experimenting with car-free days. World Car Free Day is Sept. 22 but more cities like Bogota, Colombia, and Jakarta, Indonesia are hosting weekly days. (Bogota also hosts a city-wide car free dayevery year.)
New York City’s Summer Streets campaign reserves seven miles of lower Manhattan for pedestrians and cyclists for half a day. The City of North Vancouver closed a main avenue this weekend to put in place a giant water slide.

Kigali’s car free days—so far it has hosted three them and the city says it plans to hold them every month—are one of a slew of city improvement measures that Rwanda has undertaken in its bid to become one of Africa’s cleanest and most developed cities.

On Fridays, work ends early and Rwandans are advised to go out and exercise. The last Saturday of every month is Umuganda, or “coming together” day where everyone above the age of 18 and under the age of 65 is expected to help clean the streets, trim bushes, or repair public buildings. The city also bans the use of plastic bags, walking barefoot, or sharing drinks.

Over 30,000 Muslims in UK marched — Of course you didn't hear...

Ahmadiyya Muslims converge for Britain’s largest annual Islamic gathering to reject hate (Photo in a tweet by Ahmadiyya DundeeAug 16, 2016
More than 30,000 Muslims from around the world congregated at a farm in the United Kingdom for a three-day event protesting ISIS and religious extremism, the Independent reported. The protest was part of the 50th annual Jalsa Salana, an annual convention and gathering for Ahmadiyya Muslims.
The Ahmadiyya sect was founded in India in 1889 and faced persecution and violence from religious extremists in countries abroad. Despite their plight, the religious movement's official motto is "Love for all, hatred for none" and their philosophy is rooted in tolerance over extremism.

Media coverage of this large-scale gathering was barely covered in mainstream U.S. news. Even though this image flies in the face of comments from right-wing pundits and seemingly anti-Islam commentators who often ask for Muslims to speak out against Islamic terrorism. The truth is Muslims have condemned extremism repeatedly, and many people are just not listening.

Muslims have condemned the Bastille Day attacks and the Orlando shooting massacre. In December, nearly 70,000 Muslim clerics denounced religious extremism. In Belgium, Muslims condemned the terrorist attack in Brussels and donated blood. These statements have happened so often that in 2012, a professor at the University of North Carolina compiled a list of them from the global Muslim community.

And if you're still not convinced, there's a whole Tumblr blog titled "Muslims Condemning Things," listing cases where, you know, Muslims have condemning terrorism and other acts of hatred.

Clearly, the question shouldn't be whether Muslims — who have the highest number of casualties from "Islamic extremism" — are condemning terrorism worldwide.

Instead, we should be affirming Muslims that the burden of responsibility does not fall on their shoulders.

Here is why sunflowers follow the sun

"Just like people, plants rely on the daily rhythms of day and night to function," Anne Sylvester, director of the National Science Foundation's Plant Genome Research Program, says in a press release. "Sunflowers, like solar panel arrays, follow the sun from east to west. These researchers tap into information in the sunflower genome to understand how and why sunflowers track the sun." - NPR.

3 Reasons why USA care about politicians' taxes

1. Conflicts of interest: Almost every candidate who runs for public office is fairly wealthy. (Even the candidates who have the government pay their salary, like Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, make far more money than the average American.) Because of that wealth, how they made their money (we'll get to heart in a second) can tell you whether they have potential conflicts of interest — who they made that money from. Trump's business interests all over the world could become entangled with presidential politics. Just look at his response to Brexit — that the dropping euro could be good for tourism to places like his Scottish golf course. For the Clintons, the Clinton foundation could also raise the issue of conflicts of interest as it raises gobs of money from foreign entities. Would some of those governments expect special treatment from a second President Clinton? A look at recently released emails from her time at the State Department — and what aides did for big Clinton foundation donors — gives people reason to question.

2. Do they have heart?
Tax returns tell us how much candidates give to charity. The Clintons, as noted above, gave between 8 and 15 percent — or about $15 million total — during that eight-year period. Most of that went through the Clinton Family Foundation, as The Atlantic reported. They also contributed to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, First United Methodist Church and the Humana Challenge golf tournament. People could have questions about why so much of their money went to their own foundation — and whether that's really in the spirit of giving. For Trump, on the other hand, it took a Washington Post investigation to unearth that he hadn't given $1 million to veterans' charities, as he had promised after a fundraiser he held earlier this year (an event he held in competition with a debate he decided not to attend because he was upset that Fox News' Megyn Kelly was moderating). Trump eventually laid out how much was raised and allocated in a testy news conference. So is criticism of Trump unfair? Is he really quietly a very charitable person — or not? Tax returns would reveal that.

3. Are they like us?
Again, these candidates are much wealthier than the average American. Median household income in this country is $53,482, according to thecensus. The Clintons made $28 million in 2014 (mostly from speeches). They also live in a posh New York suburb, Chappaqua, where they bought their home for $1.7 million in 1999 just before leaving the White House. (In 2016 money, that appreciates to about $2.5 million.) The average home price in the U.S. in June 2016 was $358,000 (median home price was $307,000). Trump, of course, makes it a point to say he's "really rich," claiming he's worth $9 billion. Trump's net worth is something of a mystery. He says it fluctuates even based on his own "feelings." The Washington Post reported this week on a 2007 deposition that caught Trump in repeated lies and exaggerations when it came to his wealth and earnings. His tax returns would certainly clarify whether he is as rich as he says. There's also the business of tax rates. The Clintons have paid a fairly high tax rate over the years. Trump, on the other hand, has boasted that, "I fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible" and called his tax rate "none of your business." But when a candidate fights hard to pay less in taxes than most people, especially when he is uber-rich, that can be a political problem. That was certainly the case in 2012, when the Obama campaign and its outside group allies were able to paint Mitt Romney as someone who got away with paying less in taxes. (Romney paid an effective tax rate of 14 percentbecause so much of his income came from dividends and capital gains.)

Why most cancer patients in Tanzania have less chance for survival

By Dr Heri Tungaraza

Cancer diagnosis is scary news--people take it as a death sentence with no appeal. This was how it was like when HIV cases started emerging in the 1980s.

But there are great strides made in HIV treatment today. People with HIV live longer than before. This is not seen in cancer though the disease has been around since the times of Hippocrates, around 400 BC.

The contrast is not only obvious between HIV and cancer but also between cancers and cardiovascular disease where deaths have substantially gone down due new medications and state of the art technological diagnostics.

Yes, there has not been any amount of success in cancer care over the past 100 years. Over the years, we have witnessed the invention of new drugs like imatinib that have changed Chronic Myeloid Leukemia to a manageable disease. With the advent of new diagnostic tools, cancer is diagnosed much earlier than before, increasing the opportunity for treatment and in some cases cure. Advanced tests have given the health care providers a possibility of preventing around 1/3 of all cancers.

However, the little progress made all over the world in the fight against cancer is not shared by those in developing countries like Tanzania. Sadly, many patients come to the hospital at a very late stage. Studies carried in the country show that many patients with breast cancer for instance, seek medical help while they are already with stage III or IV.

This could be caused by the long distances to health care facilities, lack of awareness, and poverty among others. The government and its stake holders must take calculated steps to mitigate this trend to save thousands of lives.

The other major setback contributing to poor survival for cancer patients in the country is the poor accessibility to treatment. Cancer treatment is very expensive and it requires multi-disciplinary approach which does not come cheaply.

It can be treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal and immunotherapy. The public hospitals that have the capacity to treat cancer usually run out of these drugs due to under budgeting, leaving the patient at cross roads. For radiotherapy the challenge is equally huge because so far there us only one radiotherapy machine.

However there are plans by the government to get two more machines that would be stationed in Dar and Mwanza. To compliment these efforts, the private sector is called upon to invest in this area to improve care for oncology patients.

I must admit that our cancer patients have poor chances of survival due to the fact we are still treating cancer like a single disease. Due to poor resources, we are failing to benefit from the advantages of precision medicine where every treatment is customized for every other patient.

Till today, we have not been able to use the information from genetics. Tailored treatment plans improve patient outcome. It's also evident that we understand less about the cancer in our communities due to lack of research forcing us to always turn to the west for guidance. Research will get us more information about the cancer that our people succumb to and hence have a better chance to tackle this scourge.

2. “Kwa nini sikuwekeza mapema?”

Si kupoteza muda tu ambapo wengi wanapofikia uzeeni hujutia.
