Why Filter Coffee? Unfiltered Coffee Raises Cholesterol, Trigger Acid Reflux and Kidney Stones

To fellow casual, homemade coffee drinkers, please filter your coffee with paper filters or a clean cotton cloth. Here's what I found yesterday while reading: Regular consumption of unfiltered coffee can raise serum cholesterol levels by up to 8–10% however, paper filters are highly effective at trapping micro-grounds and coffee oils/lipids called cafestol and kahweol that affect your liver, stomach, and kidneys.

  1.  Elevated LDL ("Bad") Cholesterol ⏫

The most well-documented health risk. The oily chemical compounds, diterpenes found in the coffee i.e. cafestol and kahweol suppress liver receptors that regulate cholesterol clearance. As a result, the body struggles to break down low-density lipoprotein (LDL), causing your "bad" cholesterol levels to rise.

  1. Digestive and Stomach Discomfort

Ground coffee is inherently acidic. When micro-grounds sit at the bottom of your stomach, they can cause a prolonged release of acid, triggering inflammation or worsening acid reflux, heartburn, or GERD. For some individuals, the particles irritate the stomach and intestines, leading to mild cramping or diarrhea.

  1. Kidney Stones Risk 🔼

Coffee contains moderate amounts of oxalates, which bind to calcium in the urinary tract to form calcium oxalate stones. While liquid coffee itself contributes to this, consuming the physical micro-grounds means you are ingesting a much higher concentration of the solid plant matter where oxalates are most concentrated.
