Kilaza ni kilaza tu! Tanzania: Country to Reap Nothing from World Cup as Others Gain

Mwe! Tuna laana nawe!
Failure by Tanzanian government authorities to design and strategize plans that would put this African tourist destination in Southern African World Cup tournament map had automatically created doubts whether this nation will benefit from Africa's first historic soccer event.

Tourist stakeholders in Tanzanian Indian Ocean coastal city of Dar es Salaam and the northern tourist hub of Arusha have been frustrated by the government's failure to join other regional members in promoting the country during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Up to this day, no stringent plans and serious campaigns have been made by the Tanzanian government to attract soccer fans, teams and tourists coming for the World Cup in South Africa to skip north and visit Tanzania. It is only three hours flight from Johannesburg in South Africa to Dar es Salaam or four hours flight from other South African cities to key tourist sites in Tanzania.Despite South African tourist companies holding best lodges in Tanzania, authorities here have done nothing or little to campaign for the country's tourism collaboratively with South African firms, like the giant South African Breweries Limited (SAB). No response or comments from Tanzanian government authorities about the country's plans on World Cup benefits to its tourism industry.Tourist stakeholders in Arusha are now looking at Kenyan partners to benefit from the World Cup event.

Unlike, Tanzania, other neighbors to South Africa and Kenya in the north have launched their campaigns to reap from the World Cup tournament. Kenyan and South African governments have entered into a partnership that will see the two countries collaborate in the promotion of the tourism sector in preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

Kenyan Tourism Minister Najib Balala signed a bilateral agreement with his South African counterpart, Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, that will enable the two countries cooperate in strategic areas like sharing data and increasing investments in the sector.

Balala said Kenya is also looking forward to learning from SA on how to advance its tourism particularly at a time when its preparing to host the World Cup and on full participation at Africa's leading INDABA tourism fair.

Outstanding candidates with a background in one of the following disciplines

  • Psychology
  • Sociology

who are interested in interdisciplinary research are invited to apply for a Post-Doc Scholarship at the Jena Graduate School Human Behaviour in Social and Economic Change (GSBC)

The Jena Graduate School, funded by the Federal Programme "ProExzellenz" of the Free State of Thuringia, is supported by the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Economics and Business Administration, and the Max Planck Institute of Economics. The common research approach within the GSBC is interdisciplinary oriented and addresses the analyses of human behaviour with respect to social and economic change.

We are particularly interested in the analysis of individual as well as collective behaviour and decisions that lead to change, or adapt and even resist to change at the level of individuals, groups, industries, regions and countries. Our major concerns are the dynamics of these behaviours and/or decisions and their interrelatedness, as well as the underlying, often feedback driven, mechanisms of change. We investigate these phenomena from different disciplinary angles, which taken together provide a better understanding of social and economic change. Methods include analytical models, controlled experiments, empirical and field studies and historical investigations.

From applicants we expect a sustained research interest in one of the following four interdisciplinary research areas:

• Responses to accelerated change
• Innovation as intended change
• Changing social and economic contexts and changing identities
• Change across the lifespan

Funny: IDIOT alert

I received this email message and LOL, I hope you will like it too. Cheers.

We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, "you need a 1/4 horsepower." I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, "NO, it's not. Four is larger than two..."
We haven't used Sears repair since.

My daughter and I went through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, "You gave me too much money." I said, "Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back." She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said "We're sorry but we cannot do that kind of thing." The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75 cents in change.

From Kingman , KS -- I live in a semi-rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: "Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."

From Kansas City -- My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.' He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.

Happened in Birmingham , Ala. -- I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?" To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He smiled knowingly and nodded, "That's why we ask."

The stop-light on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged co-worker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"
She was a probation officer in Wichita , KS .

I attended a "good-bye" luncheon for an old and dear co-worker. She was leaving the company due to 'downsizing.' Our manager commented cheerfully, "This is fun. We should do this more often." Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that "deer-in-the-headlights" stare.

When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. "Hey," I announced to the technician, "It's open!" His reply, "I know.. I already got that side." This was at the Ford dealership in Canton , MS...

When I left Hawaii and was transferred to FL, I still had the Hawaiian plates on my car , as my car was shipped from Hawaii . I was parking somewhere (I can't remember) and a guy asked me "Wow, you drove from Hawaii to here?" I looked at him and quickly said "Yep. I took the Hawaii/San Francisco Bridge."
He nodded his head and said "Cool!"

Wenger bwana, sasa chupa imekukosea nini?

"I just kicked a bottle of water...." "I did it because I was disappointed, not because I thought it wasn't offside."

He added: "There were 30 seconds to go and I didn't know where to go. I didn't know you were not allowed to kick a water bottle, although it was a good kick. We were the better team but we lost the game. It is very difficult to swallow." - Wenger

Arsène Wenger on UEFA rulling that Eduardo Da Silva "deceived the referee"

I am in the opinion that, just like America's NBA games, TV reviews should also be implemented in the soccer pitch in order to help referees and lines men in judging and making correct decisions for some controvesial events that usually occur in the pitch.
And for Edo, stop watching too much Drogba or Liverpool players and many other European soccer players who are so good in faking injuries and falls. It is becoming a trend now. It's so common to hear  lots of 'mouthing' especially from the team coaches and see a lot of deceit from the players. When one succeeds in getting away with one such fake moves, it then becomes a habit.
IMHO, lets enjoy good healthy soccer with no cheating and bad mouthing.
Eduardo Da Silva faces a suspension after UEFA charged the Arsenal striker with 'deceiving the referee' during the Gunners' Champions League victory against Celtic on Wednesday. Gordon Smith, the chief executive of the Scottish FA, had said on Thursday that the Croatia international should be banned, a stance that UEFA president Michel Platini echoed.

Having studied video evidence of the incident in question, the UEFA disciplinary inspector decided to charge the player concerned.... The Uefa control and disciplinary body will examine the case on 1 September.
The charge is based on Article 10, paragraph 1c of the Uefa disciplinary regulations (misconduct of players) which states: "Players may be suspended for two competition matches, or for a specified period, for acting with the obvious intent to cause any match official to make an incorrect decision or supporting his error of judgment and thereby causing him to make an incorrect decision."

Chances of early breast cancer detection in Tanzania to improve

Thanks to the donated machines from Hologic. Read the following piece of news from Deseret News by Wendy Leonard
In remote areas of Tanzania, women no longer have to rely on 20-year-old medical technology to determine their risks of breast cancer. Thanks to two clinicians from Intermountain Medical Center and donated machines from Hologic, a worldwide women's health company, the African country of nearly 40 million people is now home to 14 new mammography machines. The new network of devices replaces the antiquated and all too ineffective breast-cancer screening program that was in effect and could save the lives of thousands of women there.

Currently, low-tech breast exams are often done by health workers in the country, and many Tanzanian women who may have breast cancer never receive more definitive diagnostic tests. When it is detected, it is usually in an advanced stage, eliminating any chance of keeping both breasts. Many women there decline mastectomy, or removal of the breast.

"This is a tragedy that shouldn't happen today," said Dr. Brett Parkinson, medical director of the Breast Care Center at IMC. "We have the skill and technology to save many of these women's lives."

Parkinson, along with Dianne Kane, nursing director of oncology services at IMC, and Hologic representative Shannon McCarrel recently returned from the sovereign state of Africa as part of the East African Breast Care Project. The organization is devoted to helping Tanzanian women get access to screening mammography and breast ultrasound equipment and ultimately establishing a comprehensive breast-care clinic in that nation's largest city.

It was not the first trip for the project, as the group at IMC had forged a partnership with the Women's Medical Association of Tanzania in 2007 when a group of Tanzanian physicians visited Utah. Another group came the following year to train at IMC's center.

During their most recent trip, the group helped to educate dozens of Tanzanian health-care professionals, including physicians, students, technicians and administrators, in the area about the complications of breast cancer.

They also ran an ultrasound/breast biopsy clinic to instruct doctors on a new minimally invasive ultrasound-guided biopsy done through the skin. The procedure is a less-invasive option to surgical biopsy and facilitates tissue sampling of suspicious tumor masses originally identified on imaging but not felt on clinical breast exams.

"Our goal is to help doctors find the disease at a less-advanced stage so they can treat it with less-aggressive measures," Parkinson said. "Breast cancer seems to be different in Tanzania. We saw several cases of younger women with late-stage disease, most of whom will not survive."

As of now, the only option for women with breast cancer in the area is a mastectomy.

"As we collect data from our ongoing experiences, we will have a better idea of the epidemiology of breast cancer in that part of the world," he said.

The East African Breast Care Project plans to return to Tanzania annually, next year adding a surgeon to teach lumpectomy procedures to physicians in the country, a procedure that could save more breasts and stave off late stages of incurable cancer.
