12 PhD positions at The University of Vienna

The University of Vienna announces the vacancy of 12 PhD positions for college assistants within the interdisciplinary doctoral college “Empowerment through Human Rights”. Duration of the posts is three years each; 20 hours part-time employmentat the University of Vienna for the whole period. During this period, the college assistants will work together in the interdisciplinary group and will each write a stand-alone PhD thesis. College assistants can seek participation in related research activities within the institutions involved to an extent of another 20 hours. The deadline for application is 30 September 2009; interviews with applicants will be conducted from 15 October onwards; the planned starting date for all 12 positions is 1 January 2010.

Remuneration is granted on the basis of the current collective agreement of the University of Vienna, amounting to € 16,780.

The four main topics covered by the doctoral college are:
  • The Protection and Empowerment of Vulnerable and Discriminated Groups
  • Poverty
  • Migration and Asylum and
  • Consequences of Gross Human Rights Violations, in particular Torture, or Disability on the Individual
The interdisciplinary research activities of the doctoral college will be founded on a “Human Rights Based Approach” (HRBA), which builds the bridge between the different disciplines. This approach offers the possibility to consider certain phenomena, such as migration, poverty or the consequences of gross human rights violations on the individual from a rights-based perspective. Fundamental elements of this approach are empowerment of persons to exercise their rights; obligations on the part of others, in particular States; a system of effective accountability; and the principle of equality and non-discrimination. In addition, participation of members of vulnerable groups in the research activities is an important element of the HRBA. The college assistants will receive individual supervision of their theses within the respective disciplines by the members of the faculty, Prof. Ursula Kriebaum and Prof. Manfred Nowak (law), Prof. Christoph Reinprecht (sociology), Prof. Walter Schicho (development studies) and Prof. Germain Weber (psychology). In addition, they will be provided with comprehensive interdisciplinary supervision by all members of the faculty. The members of the faculty and other renowned guest lecturers end expert practitioners will hold a variety of courses, workshops and tutorials jointly in the interdisciplinary setting of the group. Instructions in additional skills such as scientific writing and publishing, project acquisition and management as well as involvement in university teaching through individual and joint courses will complete the academic curriculum for the college assistants.
  
The cooperation between the disciplines will provide the college assistants with an extensive understanding of the complex interactions between root causes of, mitigation strategies against and consequences of human rights violations.

About the requirements:
Applicants for the PhD positions must hold a four year masters’ degree or equivalent in disciplines related to the college’s topic. They must demonstrate previous human rights related experience in the academic and/or practical field. Very good knowledge of English (academic level) is required as the research work will be conducted in English.

Transport Sector Development Specialist/Team Leader, East Africa

 
Nathan Associates Inc. is seeking a Transport Sector Development Specialist/Team Leader for an eight-month East Africa Corridor Diagnostic Study (CDS) co-funded by USAID and DfID. The CDS has been designed to provide a clear sense of the costs and benefits of different interventions along the Northern and Central Corridors of East Africa and provide a platform for enhanced coordination between international donors. It will also initiate a sustainable public-private dialogue by highlighting corridor development solutions, including public-private partnerships (PPPs) and promoting mechanisms for private sector advocacy of corridor reforms.

 
The CDS will include a synthesis of existing studies and collation of data on transit efficiency, an audit and diagnostic of transit efficiency along the Northern and Central Corridors, and the formation of a prioritized action plan for corridor reform. The CDS also features a communications component to raise awareness of the study, and increase public-private dialogue on corridor reform. The study will culminate in a Stakeholder Conference to review/assess the proposed action plan.

 
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in all modes of transport including logistics, transport economics and financing, transport operation and management and transport policies;
  • Understanding of trade and transport issues affecting the movement of imports and exports along trade corridors;
  • At least 10 years of experience working in East Africa;
  • Advanced degree in transport logistics, transport economics, public administration, or related field;
  • Strong supervisory skills; demonstrated ability to manage administratively and operationally on a regional or multi-country project;
  • Excellent conceptual, writing, and interpersonal skills;
The 8-month position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. Housing and other relevant allowances will be provided to non-residents of Nairobi.

Benki Kuu Tanzania yachapisha noti mpya ya shilingi 2,000

BENKI Kuu ya Tanzania (BoT) imetoa noti mpya za Sh2,000 ambazo zitatumika sanjari na zilizopo kwenye mzunguko kwa sasa.

Gavana wa BoT, Profesa Benno Ndulu alisema jana kupitia taarifa yake kwa vyombo vya habari kwamba, lengo la kutoa noti hizo mpya ni kukidhi mahitaji yake kwenye mzunguko wa fedha nchini.

"Noti hizi mpya zinatofauti moja tu na zile ambazo zimo kwenye mzunguko kwa sasa nayo ni saini zilizopo.

Saini zilizopo kwenye noti mpya ni za Waziri wa Fedha na Uchumi, Mustafa Mkulo na Gavana wa Benki kuu ya Tanzania,” alisema.

Profesa Ndulu alisema kuwa noti hizo bado zina rangi ya kahawia, zikiwa na michoro inayoonyesha mandhari ya kitanzania kiuchumi, kiutamaduni pamoja na urithi wetu na mazingira.

"Mbele ya noti, bado kuna picha inayoonyesha utajiri wetu wa kuwa na mojawapo ya wanyama pori wakubwa yaani simba ,alama ya kificho ya twiga ambayo bado ipo kama ilivyo katika noti nyingine zinazozunguka sasa" lilifafanua tangazo hilo.

Alama nyingine zilizopo katika noti hiyo ambazo hazina tofauti na iliyopo kwenye mzunguko ni nyuma ya noti kuna picha inayoonyesha picha ya ngome kongwe illiyopo Forodhani jijini Zanzibar.

Vile vile, alisema zina picha ya kinyago cha kuchonga na alama ya usalama inayobadilika rangi ikigeuzwa.

”Benki kuu inawashauri wananchi kuwa hakuna haja ya kubadili noti hizo kwani thamani yake ni ileile na kwamba haina mpango wa kuzifuta zilizokuwepo katika mzunguko wa awali.
